We oppose the re-election of Representative John McGuire, Virginia 5th Congressional District. His position on the War with Iran is reason enough for anyone, regardless of their political affiliation, to vote against Representative McGuire.

• Who started it? The United States. Iran has never attacked us on American soil. They seized our embassy in 1979 and since then have attacked our troops that we stationed in the Middle East.
• Is it conducted legally? No. President Trump started this war on his own initiative, bypassing the War Powers Resolution of 1973 and the War Powers Clause of the U.S. Constitution. His party has blocked a decision to authorize the war, or not, with Representative McGuire's vote in favor of the block.
• Don't we need to stop Iran from having nuclear weapons? It would be nice if we could. Unfortunately, an agreement that might have accomplished that was discarded in 2018. Since then, attacks in 2025 and 2026 probably taught Iran's regime that they would be safer from U. S. attacks if they had nuclear weapons.
• What is the political damage? We've shown Iran that they can resist America's direct attacks. We've shown regional allies that we can't fully protect them. We've shown weakness to other potential adversaries. We've created a perception that we act in Israel's interest.
• What is the economic damage? Fluctuating gas prices are the least of it. Iran has been able to close the Strait of Hormuz at will. Our stockpiles of defensive weapons will have to be replenished.
• What is the moral damage? We have killed Iranian civilians and leaders on their soil. What could we say if Iran is ever able to reply in kind?
• What about supporting the troops? Officially, around twenty U. S. troops have been killed in this war. Several hundred have been wounded. All of their families and loved ones have been affected. We should only expect these sacrifices for a cause that's worthy, and in service of a plan that could work. President Trump has not stated clear and consistent objectives. The country as a whole is not behind this war. Our troops are better served by ending the war.
• Shouldn't we see this through to victory? That became impossible after the first few days. We can kill many more Iranians. We can't win the war because Iran's regime controls how much damage it can accept.
• Whose fault is this? American voters elected politicians who started the war, and American taxpayers fund it. We can't really blame this on Israel, Netanyahu, or even President Trump. We are the ones who would have to fix it.
• What should be done about it? In 2026, we can elect a Congress that will end the war quickly and work to repair the damage. If not, the war will continue until at least 2029.
